At the center of the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His life was pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was to care for his flock of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the breezes among the single tree on the mountaintop were his only associates. Day after day, looking out for his responsibilities instilled in him a notion of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of solitude, when the shepherd boy would pine for company. On one such day from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a troublesome scheme.

Stories of wolves hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the hamlet. So, the boy chose to exploit this fear and played a joke on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no wolf.

The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This trick continued for a few days more. But, one day, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one showed up.

Frustrated and alone, the boy here fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.

His tale of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
